When you think about favorite desserts, a few things come to mind – fruits, ice cream, and waffles. Belgium’s most famous contribution to food are waffles, and they have been around in history since the Middle Ages. A waffle is a cake made out of dough or batter than is cooked in a waffle iron to give it a distinctive check-patterned impressions.

The history of the Belgian waffle started in the Middle Ages as waffles. Initially, they were sold as unleavened crisp cakes baked in a wafer iron. In that period, they were made out of a mix of barley and oats. The waffle iron was made out of two metal plates that are connected by a hinge and an arm attached to a wooden handle. The waffle iron was put over a fire, and flipped like a pancake to cook both sides of the waffle.

Waffle vendors were allowed to sell waffles outside of churches during special celebrations and on the feast days of saints. It is said in many history books that King Charles IX of France ruled that waffle vendors had to set up their stalls at least 12 feet (4 meters) away from each other as eating waffles was so popular.

Did you know that there are two different types of waffles? They are the Brussels waffle and a Liege waffle. Around the world, the Brussels waffle is more well known as the Belgian waffle. It was first introduced into America at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York by Maurice Vermersch. He introduced it into the US market as the “Belgian waffle” because most Americans did not know where Brussels was. Brussels waffles are usually served dusted with confectioner’s sugar or topped with chocolate, soft fruits, or whipped cream.

Liege waffles are different to Brussels waffles as they are denser, chewier, sweeter, and richer. They were made in 18th century history by the Chef of the Prince-Bishop of Liege. Unlike the Brussels waffle, the Liege waffle was adapted from brioche bread dough. It features pearl sugar chunks which caramelize on the waffle’s exterior when it is baked. Surprisingly, Liege waffles are the most common type of waffles available in Belgium. They come in 3 different flavors – plain, vanilla, and cinnamon.

If you are wondering how to make your own waffle recipe mix, here is a recipe for the famous Brussels waffle.

Brussels Waffle Recipe
2.5 oz. Active dry yeast
¼ milk
3 egg yolks
2 ¾ cups of warm milk (110 F/45C)
¾ cup of butter, melted and cooled
½ cup of white sugar
1 ½ tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla extract
4 cups plain flour
3 egg whites

Dissolve ¼ cup of warm milk in a small bowl. Let it stand for 10 minutes.

Whisk together egg yolks, ¼ cup of warm milk, and melted butter in a large bowl. Mix in the yeast, salt, sugar, and vanilla before mixing in the flour and the remaining 2 ½ cups of milk alternately. Whisk the egg whites until soft peaks are formed before folding it into the batter. Tightly wrap the bowl with plastic wrap and place it in a warm area for about an hour until it has doubled in volume.

Get the waffle iron out and preheat it. Brush the insides of the waffle maker with oil before putting ½ cup of oil onto the middle of the iron. Close the lid and start baking the waffles until steam has stopped coming out from the waffle maker and the waffles are golden brown in color.

There are about 508 calories per serving in this recipe.

Or if you learn how to make the most popular waffles in Belgium, try the recipe below:

Liege Waffle Recipe
2.5 oz. Active dry yeast
1 ½ tbs white sugar
¾ cup milk, lukewarm
3 eggs
1 cup butter, melted
2 tsp vanilla extract
3 cups flour
½ tsp salt
1 ½ cups of pearl sugar

In a small bowl, sprinkle white sugar and the yeast over warm milk. Let it stand until the yeast starts to soften and begins to create a creamy foam. This should take about 15 minutes.

Mix the eggs, vanilla extract, and melted butter into the yeast mix until it has been evenly blended. Stir both the flour and salt together in a large bowl. Make a well and pour the egg mixture in. Stir the flour mix until it forms a soft dough. Cover the bowl with a light cloth and leave it in a warm place to let it rise double the original volume. This should take about 30 minutes. After this, gently stir in the pearl sugar.

Preheat the waffle maker before putting dough the size of a single playing card on it. It will take about 2 minutes to cook until it is crisp and golden brown.

If you are wondering what the amount of calories that are in the Liege waffle, it is about 458 calories per serving. That is 50 calories less than regular Brussels waffles!

A couple of years back while visiting my sister in London, she took me for a waffle cafe located next to Green Park station, along Oxford Street. Prior to this experience, I have never seen or tasted Belgian waffles and when I did get myself a piece topped with one scoop Ben’s & Jerry’s Double Chocolate ice-cream and drizzles with hot fudge, it was simply amazing. I can still remember every detail of the experience, the atmosphere, the crowd and more importantly the waffle’s taste, its shape and its sweet aroma.

When I got back to Malaysia, all I could think of was making a few waffles to serve them to my family and friends. When the time finally came, I realized that I had the complete and exact recipe and even the right ice-cream but I was lacking the proper waffle maker. A few kitchenware brands are starting to produce waffle makers for homemakers, basically encouraging those at home to start making their own waffles just like how they see it in restaurants.

Toastmaster is known for manufacturing waffle makers. People at home can easily make waffles using a Toastmaster waffle iron. The heat that the iron produces cooks the waffle faster. Another famous waffle making brand is Presto Flipside. They are famous for manufacturing professional 180 degrees rotating waffle maker that is equipped with a countdown timer so people know when the waffles are ready instead of worrying that the waffles will burn. Cuisinart is a big kitchenware brand too has started producing waffle makers. Their waffle making products varies from making 2 pieces of waffle to 8 pieces and it is equipped with non-stick interior and browning control system.

Some may recommend Waring Pro Professional waffle makers as it is one of the best out of all of the professional quality waffle makers for the home. The waffle plates have extra-deep pockets which can produce thicker Belgian waffles with crispy outer layer. It is also a rotating waffle maker that ensures to cook on both sides as well as browning control knob that can allows customers to choose whether to make a lighter or darker skin waffles. Waring Pro waffle makers are also equipped with timer.

Villaware is another product many would be familiar with that have earned many good reviews. Famous for their range of kitchenware, Villaware’s waffle makers seem to be getting the thumbs up too with their clean outer look and non-stick interior that can be easily clean plus browning control system. They too provide variety of models ranging from 2 slices machine to 4 slices.

My personal favorite would be from Oster as it is a light, professional rotating maker with non-stick interior, timer and browning control system. So far with Oster waffle maker, I have only failed once in making a mouthwatering Belgian waffles and that was on my first time. Since then, my Belgian waffles have been made to perfection – simply crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Served with ice-cream or plain butter and maple syrup, it is absolutely divine. it is amazing to find out there are waffle makers out there that allow homemakers to make commercial looking waffles at home.

Have you ever wanted waffles like the ones that come from restaurants, ice cream parlors, and hotels? There are many products on the market that claim to make waffles like a pro. However, nothing beats the Waring WMK300 waffle iron maker as it really does bring a whole new level to home waffle makers.

One of the worst home waffle experiences that has been encountered by many people are that they do not turn out evenly baked or browned. The Waring WMK300 Belgian Waffle Maker is really great, as it has a 180 degree rotary thermostat feature so the waffles are baked and browned consistently.

Many make-at-home waffle iron appliances sadly do not come with a warranty. This is rather annoying especially if you are worried that it may break down. Fortunately, the Waring WMK300 comes with a 1-year appliance warranty for your peace of mind.

If you are unsure how to make a waffle mix, fortunately there is a recipe and other instructions included in the manual. This recipe makes delicious, browned and fluffy waffles every time. Yum! It simply just does not get better than that!

As a Swede, it is hard to find waffles in restaurants or cafes done the Nordic way. When I tell my American friends that there is really a difference between American-style waffles and Scandanavian waffles, they tend to scoff saying that there is no difference between them.

For those who are unfamiliar with Scandanavian waffles, the waffle iron used is heart-shaped where as the American one is usually circular. Although the recipe and the batter is similar to other variteties, Scandanavian waffles are quite thin. The toppings are also a bit different.

Suffering from home sickness, my husband and I decided to buy a waffle maker. After researching reviews for a while on the internet to find the best waffle iron, I narrowed it down to a few professional or commercial-style waffle makers that are sold for home use.

The product reviews that truly caught my eye were Waring, Krups, and Cuisinart. What I really liked about these waffle makers were that they seemed to have many useful functions that the other brands did not have, yet they were roughly around the same price range as the others. I recently bought my waffle iron and cannot wait to use it.

The Presto FlipSide Belgian Waffle Maker is one of the best waffle irons out there in the market. It is very user friendly, and has a lot of great functions that are necessary to make great waffles in your home kitchen. It is quite attractive with a brushed stainless steel exterior, and is quite compact at 12 x 12 x 3 inches.

One of the problems that many people encounter when making waffles at home is that the batter is not evenly coated in the waffle plates. Presto has solved this problem by ensuring that their vertical position flip design assists in evenly coating the batter on the plates. It bakes 7-inch wide waffles that has 4 sections that are very easy to cut – just like at a restaurant!

Do you ever have problems counting down the time and worry that you will burn your food? This waffle maker comes with a countdown timer with a digital time display so you know just when to pop the waffles out of the iron. In addition, if you are worried about the waffles sticking to the waffle plates, it is cooked on a non-stick surface.

After going out to eat so many waffles at dessert parlors, I thought, “Hey, wouldn’t it be great to eat homemade waffles?” The trouble is, I did not know how to make them nor did I actually own a waffle maker. As a result, I decided to consult my mother for ideas on the best waffle maker brands to purchase.

My mother said she read a review that the Gold Medal waffle maker was quite good. There are many varieties of Gold Medal old fashioned waffle irons, and they are often used in restaurants and other places of a commercial nature. I managed to find one on the internet, and waited a few days for my package to the arrive. I couldn’t wait!

After all the excitement, it was only then that I remembered that I am not that great in the kitchen. I was worried about making waffles from scratch, since the last time I made pancakes, I accidentally burned them. Fortunately, there are a few pre-made waffle mixes in the supermarket which you can purchase. This includes the Krusteaz Belgian Waffle Mix, which makes around 4-5 different waffles. There is also the Classique Fare Belgian Waffle Mix, where all you need to do is to add milk and eggs. However, after using the waffle maker for a while, I decided to make malted waffles from scratch for the first time. Guess what? They worked out perfectly! I cannot wait to make them again!

The WAF-4B model Cuisinart Belgian Waffle Iron, which bakes a 4-slice deep pocket Belgian waffle, has a shiny brushed stainless steel exterior and an embossed logo.

Making the waffle becomes a painless affair as the green indicator light, along with an audible tone tells when the iron is ready to be filled and when the waffles are ready for eating. The red Power On indicator stays lighted throughout the baking. Six selectable browning levels, coupled with waffle recipes included with the instruction manual, ensures the best waffles made with the mix of your choosing. Once everyone’s had their fill, the non-stick baking plates makes cleaning easy, and a locking latch will keep the iron closed for storage. As a bonus, the cord wraps under the base while the iron can be stood on its end. With favorable maker reviews and a three-year limited warranty, the model WAF-4B provides class and convenience to kitchen that has it.
